U23s draw with Burnley in final pre-season fixture

4 August 2017

Norwich City’s U23s finished off their preparations for the upcoming Premier League 2 season with a 2-2 draw against Burnley at Colney.

Pierre Fonkeu gave the hosts the lead in the opening minutes with an accurate strike before Diallang Jaiyesimi doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Burnley fought back in the second half and goals from Oliver Younger and Khius Metz ensured the match ended all-square.

Head Coach Matt Gill handed new signing Tom Trybull a start in the heart of the midfield with the experienced Steven Naismith, suspended from first-team duty this weekend, playing in-behind Fonkeu up front.

It was Fonkeu who gave the home side an early advantage after some intricate build-up play down the left hand side. Todd Cantwell fed the Belgian striker who rifled a powerful effort first time beyond the grasp of the Burnley goalkeeper.

City kicked on from their opener and could have easily doubled their lead soon after. Jaiyesimi, Naismith and Fonkeu all had terrific opportunities to add to their advantage, with the visiting Clarets rarely threatening at the other end.

Jaiyesimi was proving difficult for Burnley to deal with in the first half and he ensured the Canaries would head into the interval two goals to the good when he swivelled in the box and found the roof of the net with a thumping strike on 43 minutes.

The second half was a much closer affair but Burnley still found chances in short supply. However, they did pull a goal back on the hour mark when Younger bundled home from a Mark Howarth corner.

The Clarets equalised against the run of play with just over ten minutes left when Metz finished well from Tinashe Chakwana’s cross. However, City could have easily won the match in the dying minutes but substitute Devonte Aransibia’s delivery proved too difficult for Jaiyesimi to control in the six-yard box.

Nonetheless, it was another useful outing for Gill’s squad as they now turn their focus to their opening league fixture at home to Brighton and Hove Albion a week on Monday.

Norwich City: Oxborough, Aarons, Middleton (Wallis, 86), Trybull (Sambu, 56), Odusina, Efete, Jaiyesimi, Phillips, Fonkeu (Aransibia, 61), Naismith, Cantwell.

Subs not used: Hallett, Hlynsson, Kamal.
