David Wright confident players will flourish in FA Youth Cup

11 December 2017

David Wright hopes his Under-18s will make the most of playing at Carrow Road when they begin their FA Youth Cup campaign on Tuesday (7pm).

Many members of Wright’s squad have limited experience of playing at the Club’s home ground but the U18s Head Coach is confident his team will flourish on a “special occasion”.

“It’s a great experience for them,” he said. “The boys get the opportunity to play at our stadium which eventually their end goal is to play for our first-team.

“To give them that experience and the benefits from that is great for them.

“The players build it up themselves because it’s a big tournament for them. There’s no need for me and Alan [Neilson, Assistant Head Coach] to put any pressure on them.

“It’s more about winding them back in. You try and concentrate as it is a normal game but the boys know it’s a very special occasion and a good opportunity for them.

“Hopefully by Tuesday they’ll be ready to go."

Wright says his players are well aware of the Club’s recent success in the competition.

City won the Youth Cup in 2013 after beating Chelsea in a two-legged final and many players who featured for the Canaries then have gone on to play for the Club’s first-team and elsewhere in the EFL.

However, the U18s boss is keen for his players to focus wholly on themselves.

“Walking round the training ground, there’s lots of pictures [of that success],” added Wright. “But we’ll tend to concentrate on this group and make sure we perform to the best of our ability.

“Every game for these boys is an opportunity to impress and develop. Like I say, we don’t need to build it up for them. It’s a special occasion and we just need to prepare as normal.”
