Carlton Morris put in a Man of the Match performance on Saturday as Shrewsbury Town won 2-0 at home to Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One.
Morris won his side a penalty on 55 minutes with the score still at 0-0, but Shaun Whalley saw the resultant spot-kick saved by Luke McGee.
However, Whalley reacted in perfection fashion soon after, drilling home a rebound from close-range.
Stefan Payne - who replaced Morris on 75 minutes - then added a second late on to close out victory, keeping Salop within sight of table-topping Wigan.
Midfielder Ben Godfrey featured as a substitute in the closing stages, while Ebou Adams missed out on a place in the matchday squad.
In Sky Bet League Two, Sean Raggett's Lincoln City racked up their third straight clean sheet by playing out a 0-0 draw at Newport County.
City may have felt they could have taken more from the contest, given the hosts played the majority of the second period with ten men following Mark O'Brien's red card.
In a game of few chances they were forced to settle for a point, however, with Raggett completing 90 minutes as The Imps continued their positive recent run.
Another team who had been in decent form of late was Grimsby, but that came to an end with a 2-0 defeat away to leaders Luton Town.
Strikes from Luke Berry and James Collins settled the contest, with Diallang Jaiyesimi playing just over an hour for the away side.
A tier further down, Louis Ramsay came on the final four minutes of Woking's 2-1 reverse at home to a Barrow side featuring ex-City striker Grant Holt in the National League.
Finally, Callum Ellesley saw red in Cheshunt's heavy defeat to Canvey Island while Henry Pollock helped Norwich United record a 2-1 win over Brentwood Town.
