Coach praises efforts after Everton cup win

DMITRI Halajko highlighted his Under-23s side's organisation and discipline following their narrow 1-0 Premier League Cup win over Everton on Wednesday.

City's youngsters remain in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition thanks to Ebou Adams' instinctive strike with only eight minutes left on the clock.

Their visitors carried the main attacking threat throughout the match but Halajko told afterwards: "I thought it was a really stubborn performance. We had to work really hard to stay in the game.

"We weren't outstanding on the ball but what we were good at was holding our defensive shape, battling hard and making sure we were tough to beat.

"In the end, we managed to do something that made the difference at the end. I thought it was a close game, but I thought somebody was going to edge it and tonight it was us."

Halajko confirmed that he was taking charge of the group on a matchday for the final time after his departure was announced earlier this month.

He added: "It was nice to go out on a win. Hopefully the lads can press on both individually and collectively. There are players that can progress their careers.

"The squad's got some big games coming up. If they win the Wolves game they can get through, they've got through to the quarter-finals of the International Cup for the first time.

"It's been going really well in the cup competitions and hopefully they can make one of them count."
