Midfielder remaining grounded after superb Forest volley

JONNY Howson surprised himself with just how good his opening goal was against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The midfielder struck a stunning volley to set City on their way to a comprehensive 5-1 victory, in a game which became synonymous with spectacular strikes.

Howson's superb effort prompted debate over the best goals scored at Carrow Road, and on Monday afternoon he told reporters: "I knew I'd hit well but then you're just hoping it goes in, which luckily it did.

"At the time I didn't think it was as good as it actually was. We all like to score goals and it's extra special when you score one like that.

"I'm not on social media or anything like that, although it's nice to get that recognition. It's nice to have something positive to talk about.

"I've always tried to keep a level head, whatever happens. In this league there's always something around the corner and you can only affect what's coming up."

Typically, Howson wants to shift focus immediately, with Alex Neil's Canaries playing host to Newcastle United on Tuesday evening (7:45pm).

"It's been a case of trying to get that consistency and now we need to keep it going," the 28-year-old added.

"Losing how we did at Newcastle was hard to take but it was such a long time ago that it's not affecting us now. We want to keep this run of form going, it's not a case of getting one over them.

"You play football to be involved in the big games. The main aspect is trying to get three points, however people look at it.

"It's about taking one game at a time and keeping the momentum going."
