City draw 2-2 with Southampton at Carrow Road

ALEX Neil was left content after his City side scored late on to earn an Emirates FA Cup replay with Premier League Southampton.

Steven Naismith's glancing header in the final moments of Saturday's match pulled his team back on level terms, with it finishing 2-2 moments later at Carrow Road.

Goals from Virgil Van Dijk and Maya Yoshida had each given the visitors the advantage, but they were pegged back by Naismith and at first a Steven Whittaker penalty.

Neil said afterwards: "We wanted to continue our momentum from the other day. We put in an excellent performance against Derby.

"The message to the lads was to make sure we continue that, push on and get better. We wanted to follow it up with another positive result.

"Looking at Southampton, with the players they've got, it was a positive result."

Assessing the game in more depth, City's manager added: "I think at times we could have played better. I think our use of the ball was a bit sporadic.

"When we went one each, we looked as if we thought it was job done and we sunk back in, which was frustrating because at that stage we were on the ascendancy.

"The pleasing thing is to get the response, they continued right to the end.

"All in all, playing a Premier League team, making a few changes as they did as well, it was a competitive match and I thought we showed good things in flashes. I probably think a draw is a fairish result."

The replay will take place at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium at 7.45pm on Wednesday, January 18.
