Norwich City v Southampton

7 January 2017

REVIEW: CITY 2-2 SOUTHAMPTON

STEVEN Naismith's stoppage-time header forced a replay as the Canaries drew 2-2 with Southampton at Carrow Road.

Shane Long spurned two first half chances before the visitors had to count on a defender to stick a chance away and give them the half-time advantage.

Virgil Van Dijk drifted away from his marker at the back post and Dusan Tadic spotted him, delivering a cross that the towering Dutchman powered in on the volley.

Seven minutes after the break City were level when Harry Lewis tripped Cameron Jerome after taking a heavy touch in his own area, with Steven Whittaker assuredly converting the resultant penalty.

The visitors were straight back on the front foot, however, and retook the lead on 67 minutes when Maya Yoshida slammed a header past Michael McGovern from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's cross.

It looked like it was going to be enough, only for Naismith to pop up in added time to earn his team a draw.

HOW THEY LINED UP
Neil had outlined the league as his priority ahead of the match, and he made five changes from the 3-0 Sky Bet Championship win over Derby County on Monday.

McGovern returned in goal, with Whittaker replacing Ivo Pinto at right-back and Josh Murphy taking the place of his brother further up that flank.

Alex Pritchard started off the left instead of Wes Hoolahan, while Nelson Oliveira made way for Jerome in attack.

Matt Jarvis was on the bench for his first appearance in a matchday squad this season, while youngsters Carlton Morris and Ben Godfrey helped make up the substitutes' bench.

Nathan Redmond was among Southampton's substitutes on his first return to Norfolk since leaving in a Club-record deal last summer.

KEY MOMENT
Whittaker had an impressive game at right-back and after he converted the earlier penalty, it was from his cross that Naismith guided a header into the corner.

The former Rangers teammates combined in yellow and green to give the home crowd reason to cheer in the dying moments.

WHAT IT MEANS
The two teams will contest a replay at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium, with the date to be confirmed in due course.
