Canaries extend strong pre-season run

25 July 2017

Norwich City continued their impressive pre-season form with a win at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

Yanic Wildschut struck in the opening period, before Steven Naismith added a second after the interval.

Adopting an initial 4-1-4-1 formation, City gradually edged their way on top after a strong start by Charlton, with Wildschut becoming a growing influence as the first half wore on.

Just before the half-hour mark, Daniel Farke's side went close to an opener when a delightful dink from James Maddison released James Husband who cut back for Josh Murphy to fire over.

It wouldn't be long before the visitors went in front however, Wildschut collecting on the edge of the box before angling a low drive into the corner on 34 minutes.

The Canaries controlled things until the break, an audacious effort from Nelson Oliveira calling goalkeeper Dillon Phillips into action as he produced a smart instinctive stop.

They started the second half in the positive manner they had ended the first, albeit with a different style as they demonstrated flexibility by setting out in a 3-5-2 shape.

Responding to that alteration smoothly, the visitors doubled their lead with 54 minutes gone when Naismith whipped home a smart finish from Wildschut's cutback.

Charlton responded, with substitute goalkeeper Angus Gunn tested from long-range before Christoph Zimmermann sliced a wicked cross inches wide of his own post.

The sting steadily went out of the match following multiple changes for both side's however, with the visitors easing their way to victory in a steady closing stages.

City take in their final pre-season game on Saturday when they face Brighton & Hove Albion at Carrow Road.
