Angus Gunn: England call an unbelievable experience

17 November 2017

Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn says his recent surprise call into the senior England squad was an 'unbelievable experience' from start to finish.

The stopper had represented The Three Lions' Under-21s against Ukraine last Friday, before discovering his next duties laid with Gareth Southgate's side.

Explaining to the media how a busy few days unfolded, Gunn said: "Myself and James Maddison had a good week away with the Under-21s.

"We watched England vs Germany in the hotel and I saw on Twitter I'd be in the squad. It was a nice surprise for me!

"It was a proud moment for me and an unbelievable experience to be on the bench for the Brazil game. It was surreal to start with but as soon as you're on the training pitch everything is the same.

"It's come sooner than I expected but for me it's a case of focusing on my football here. I just want to keep improving game-by-game."

That focus for Gunn begins with Saturday's Sky Bet Championship game against Barnsley, with Daniel Farke's side looking to fully find their stride once again.

"Performance-wise, we've done quite well at home but the results haven't been good enough," the 21-year-old outlined ahead of the weekend clash.

"It's about finding the balance between keeping it tight at the back but scoring goals as well. We need to take our first chance.

"We're just looking forward to getting on a good run now and climbing the table. We've got a run of games before Christmas now so hopefully we can start with a positive result.

"We had a tough few weeks before the international break but we've come back with fresh minds."
