City’s Angus Gunn kept a clean sheet and James Maddison made his international debut as England U21s won 2-0 in Ukraine.
England’s victory, with a first-half strike from Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke and a 62nd minute own goal by Pavlo Lukyanchuk, cemented England’s place at the top of Group D in European Championship qualifying after five matches.
Maddison, called-up by to the U21s for the first time last week, was an 81st-minute substitute for goalscorer Solanke. He almost made an immediate impact, with his free-kick causing problems in Ukraine’s box before they managed to scramble it clear.
Gunn was later called into the England senior squad for their friendly against Brazil on Tuesday evening.
England, who are unbeaten, will next be in qualifying action in March when they face Ukraine again.
Elsewhere, Marley Watkins was an unused substitute as Wales went down 2-0 to France at the Stade de France. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Olivier Giroud settled things with 29 minutes remaining.
Wes Hoolahan’s Republic of Ireland face the first leg of their World Cup qualifier against Denmark on Saturday, with the match kicking off in Copenhagen at 7.45pm.
