Matt Gill calls for fast start at Bournemouth

3 October 2017

Matt Gill has urged his Under-23s to make a fast start to their opening Premier League Cup fixture against Bournemouth on Wednesday (7pm).

Gill’s squad have fought back to draw their last three matches in Premier League 2 but the Head Coach has called on his squad to begin the match at the Vitality Stadium on the front foot.

“We’ve had some decent results, and some that have disappointed us a bit because we felt we should have got more,” said Gill. “We’re at the point now where we need to start games better.

“We seem to be at our best when we are behind so we need to start games more positively. That’s what we’ve been working on the last week or so, to really be on the front foot from the off.

“Results-wise, to come back in matches, shows there’s a real positivity around the boys. They’re resilient and never think they’re beaten, which are great attributes for young lads to have.

“A lot of young teams, if they go two goals down early on, could go under. I’ve praised the grit they’ve shown, we just need to make sure we’re the team going two goals up now.

Gill is expecting a tough test on Wednesday and his youngsters could face a strong Bournemouth side featuring Premier League striker Callum Wilson.

“It’s a really good opportunity for them to come up against different styles of football,” he continued. “This week might bring a few different challenges, as Bournemouth may drop some players down.

“I read that Callum Wilson might make his comeback from injury tomorrow, so for our two centre-halves that’s a huge opportunity against a Premier League striker.

“For that to happen is brilliant, so for me, the more they drop down the better. It helps our lads with their learning and can only accelerate it.

“It’s another long journey. It’s a stadium game, which the boys love. We’re looking for a better start, without a shadow of a doubt. We’ve worked on things in training which might help trigger that, but we still want to see the same grit and resilience too.”

Tickets are available for pre-purchase now and seating is unreserved. Entry can be gained via turnstile B at the Vitality Stadium. For more information, CLICK HERE.
