Norwich City Football Club are delighted to welcome Rob Metcalfe as our Community Hero for Saturday's Sky Bet Championship game against Leeds United.
Rob, a member of Friends of Morston Church which is a registered charity dedicated to raising funds for the maintenance and repair of All Saints Church in Morston and has so far helped to raise over £100,000.
"We started the charity Friends of Morston Church 15 years ago to help repair and maintain the village church," he told canaries.co.uk.
"Like a lot of Norfolk villages, we had a lovely old church and not many people to support it, alongside a growing repair bill.
"It was estimated that we needed over £100,000 to keep the church intact, so that spurred the formation of the charity."
Friends of Morston Church have held quizzes, talks, concerts and book sales to help fundraise. Sale organiser Rob Metcalfe launched the Morston Book Sale over nine years ago and the book sales have contributed to half of the £100,000 raised for the church.
Previous donations from the book sales have included a PG Wodehouse first edition which sold for more than £300. A few years ago they came across two rare first edition volumes of the Jane Austen novel, Mansfield Park - however the third and final volume of Jane Austen’s classic is missing and, if found, they are set to be worth £16,000.
"At last year’s book sale, we raised just over £11,000," he added.
"In the first year it was £2,000 and we were very pleased with that but it has just grown and grown. We have more books than ever for 2018 so it would be great if we could beat last year’s total.
"The book sale is a huge team effort which starts with the very kind people who donate their books to us.
"There are lots of people who help set up the sale itself – unpacking 30,000 books takes a bit of doing – bake and serve refreshments throughout the sale and then, of course, pack it all up afterwards."
The next Morston Book Sale will take place at Morston Barn on Saturday. May 5 until Monday, May 7. For more details, visit www.fmc.org.uk.
Please give a big Carrow Road welcome to Rob on Saturday as he brings out the matchball ahead of our game against Leeds United.
