Daniel Farke: We gave our all

25 August 2018

Daniel Farke said his team gave everything in their 3-0 defeat to early league leaders Leeds United.

Despite a bright start from the City side at Carrow Road, Leeds were able to slot away two goals in quick succession in the first half, sealing the Canaries’ fate with a third goal in the 67th minute.

But Farke said his team battled until the final second to try to earn back a goal.

“It is a disappointing result, we were highly motivated today to be the first team to beat the leaders of the league Leeds but it wasn’t possible,” he said.

“The players gave their everything. We won 60% of our duals and we were really highly motivated even after we were down 3-0 we didn’t lose our nerves and we tried everything until the last second to get at least one goal. I’m totally happy with our workload, it was just an unbelievably difficult game.”

Leeds have won four out of their last five league games, but Farke said his team were able to play on their level.

“It is a good sign that we are able to be competitive on this level because I think Leeds proved today that they are 100% at the moment the best team in the league, but we were able to play on their level,” he said.

“And in many periods of the game, especially in the first 25 minutes, we were on the front foot and when you want to be successful on this level then you have to use such a good period to take the lead and if you are not able to do this then at least you have to play without mistakes.”

Farke praised the performance of Louis Thompson who made his first league start for the Canaries since November 2016.

He said: “It was a nice day for him. I think it would be much brighter for him if we would have been successful but in general his performance was really good and it is good to have him back.”

And Farke said his team now have to recover quickly as they travel to Cardiff City on Tuesday for the second round of the Carabao Cup.

“It won’t be easy at Cardiff because we are playing an away game in the cup against a Premier League side. But we will try to recover pretty quickly and be there with a strong squad in order to try to go into the third round,” he said.
