Matt Gill hopes his Under-23s can build on the momentum they've managed to create towards the tail end of their pre-season schedule.
City ended their preparations for the 2018-19 Premier League 2 campaign with a 3-2 victory at Dereham Town on Monday night thanks to goals from Adam Idah and Anthony Spyrou (2).
Speaking post-match, Gill said: "A win is a win. We wanted to finish pre-season positively and getting the win obviously wasn't the be all and end all but it's nice to take a win into the season.
"The test out there is stuff that we can't teach the lads. They came up against experienced men which is good.
"I think the boys would have learned loads from games like this tonight and credit to them, they stuck at it and won the game.
"We are a young-ish team that is learning every day and the boys are desperate to get better.
Looking ahead to their season opener, Gill said he hopes his team can begin on a positive.
"It's at the home of Walsall which will be good for the lads," he added. "It's been a long pre-season and we're all keen for the season to start.
"We have quite a small squad so I'm pleased that we've managed to come through pre-season and gained some robustness and had a real togetherness which will stand us in good stead for the campaign."
