City come from behind to beat Rotherham 3-1

1 December 2018

City came from behind to beat Rotherham 3-1 at Carrow Road, extending their unbeaten run.

Norwich dominated possession from the start, but went behind just 11 minutes into the game with a rebound effort from Richie Towell at close range.

But three second half goals from Todd Cantwell, Max Aarons and Teemu Pukki secured another three points for the Canaries.

Daniel Farke made two changes to his starting eleven from the side which faced Hull, with Cantwell replacing Onel Hernandez, who is out with an injury, and Mario Vrancic in for Tom Trybull, who dropped to the bench.

City started off comfortably with plenty of possession and were moving the ball well around the pitch. However Rotherham were working hard to stay tight on each player, forcing City to be patient in the final third.

Marco Stiepermann latched on to a lovely ball through from Lewis in the 10th minute, however his effort from a tight angle went well over.

Rotherham took the lead just minutes later after winning the first corner of the game. A short corner found its way out to Will Vaulks outside of the box who blasted an effort at Tim Krul. The City keeper made the save but was unable to stop the rebound effort from Richie Towell at close range.

Norwich were forced to weather another spell of pressure from the visitors with two consecutive corners. Rotherham looked dangerous on the delivery, but City were able to clear. Another good chance came for Rotherham with a low strike from Ryan Williams, but the ball hit the post and rolled out of play for a goal kick.

A chance came for Norwich in the 28th minute with a good build up from Cantwell and Jamal Lewis ending in a low cross falling to the feet of Stiepermann. However, his shot was blocked by the Rotherham defence.

Although City continued to dominate possession, they were unable to turn it into any clear-cut chances.

Norwich were awarded a free-kick in a promising position in the 37th minute after a foul on Cantwell. Vrancic stepped up to take it, but his curling shot just clipped the wall before going out for a corner kick.

Rotherham made their first change just ahead of half time, with Jon Taylor coming on for Joe Newell who required treatment on the pitch.

The Canaries were awarded another free kick after a foul on Cantwell just outside the box, but Emi Buendia’s attempt narrowly went over.

A frustrating first half for City came to an end with a wild shot from Cantwell.

Rotherham made a change at the start of the second half, with Richard Wood replacing Clark Robertson.

Norwich picked up the tempo straight from the whistle and worked hard to drive forwards. A deep corner cross from Buendia fell at the far post, but Alex Tettey was unable to keep it in.

City went level in the 55th minute as Cantwell got his first goal for the Club. Vrancic put a lovely ball in to Pukki who cut it back across the box for Cantwell to fire home.

Norwich had another chance with a free-kick on the right after Vrancic was brought down. His first attempt hit the wall and deflected back for a second shot, which rolled just inches wide.

City took the lead in the 71st minute with a brilliant goal from Max Aarons. The right back made a run in behind the Rotherham defence to pick up a lovely ball flicked through by Cantwell to head home his first league goal.

Norwich continued to pile on the pressure and could have had a third after a Buendia strike was palmed away by Marek Rodak, falling to Pukki to slot home. However the Finnish striker hit the ball wide.

But it wasn’t long until Pukki got a goal of his own. Stiepermann did well to win the ball off the Rotherham defence and fed it into the path of the Finn who slotted it home in his 12th for the Club.

Farke made three late changes, with Jordan Rhodes coming on for Lewis, Tom Trybull on for Vrancic and Ben Godfrey on for Pukki.

Norwich could have made it four just before the whistle, with Trybull down the right laying the ball across the area for Pukki, but his strike hit Rodak and the keeper gathered the follow up to keep the score 3-1.
