David Wright: We're targeting a fast start

6 February 2018

David Wright says his Under-18s have learned from their past mistakes and are now targeting a quick start in their FA Youth Cup fifth round tie on Wednesday night.

City’s youngsters take on Newcastle United at Carrow Road in the next round having knocked out Barnsley and Derby County in previous rounds.

In both those matches, City have found themselves trailing at half-time but Wright says his team will come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders on Wednesday.

“We’ve scored plenty of goals and obviously in the last round, it was a very up-and-down game,” admitted Wright.”

“To be fair to the boys, they kept their composure and in the end, ended up going through quite comfortably.

“It’s definitely a big occasion for the boys. From all the games we’ve been in, myself and Alan [Neilson, assistant coach] haven’t needed to rev it up at all. The boys rev it up themselves.

“With it being at Carrow Road, it’s very emotional because in terms of playing on stages like this, quite a lot of them are inexperienced in that sense.

“I’d expect as we move forward, instead of waiting 45 minutes to get going like we have done, the boys take responsibility individually and collectively right from the first whistle to go and express themselves.

“There’s nothing to be scared of – they’re very good footballers and that’s why they play for this club.”

Despite their slow starts, Wright had been impressed by the character his players have shown to dig in and fight to stay in the competiton.

“They’ve stayed in the games,” he added. “They haven’t played like they could have done from the start but they’ve stayed in games. The game has never been taken away from them.

“Full credit to the boys as individuals and a collective. They have got that character and they will dig in and fight for each other, which is great.”
