Jamal Lewis relishing first derby experience

15 February 2018

Jamal Lewis is relishing his first experience of an East Anglian derby at any level when Norwich City host Ipswich Town in the Sky Bet Championship on Sunday (12pm).

The youngster has established himself as a mainstay in Daniel Farke's side since making his first professional start at Birmingham City on Boxing Day, making a further eight appearances since then.

On the prospect of that run continuing this weekend, Lewis told canaries.co.uk: "It would be the first derby I've been involved in so I'm looking forward to it.

"I've never even played one at youth level as Ipswich aren't in our category. I'm totally looking forward to it, particularly with us having home advantage at Carrow Road.

"Everything we're doing this week is working towards the game and the anticipation is building. Everyone knows what they're doing and what they're supposed to do.

"We've got a couple of new additions which has given us fresh legs. There's always something special in the air for derby games, it's a beautiful thing.

"Every game means a lot to me though, whether it's a derby or a friendly. I want to play every game with the same intensity and menality."

Despite his tender years, Lewis is no stranger to the big stage having famously notched his maiden career goal in dramatic fashion during last month's Emirates FA Cup replay away to Chelsea.

"I didn't even realise it was that late in the game," the left-back said, when reflecting on that memorable moment at Stamford Bridge.

"It was a great ball in from Timm [Klose] and it felt like it was in the air for a long time. When I saw it go in,
it was a great moment and I felt we deserved to go through.

"If we can replicate those kind of performances in the league, we'll rack up more wins. We've got to focus on that now.

"For the last few games, we've had a real togetherness about us. If we have that against Ipswich, I've got no doubt we'll come through with a win."
