Loan Round-Up: Remi Matthews' clean sheet helps Plymouth to victory

5 February 2018

Plymouth Argyle’s remarkable resurgence continued with a 2-0 home win over title-chasing Blackburn Rovers in League One.

Reuben Lameiras and Ryan Taylor Derek Adams were both on the scoresheet as Argyle ended Blackburn’s 18-game unbeaten run in the league. Plymouth, who were bottom of the table in October, are now 11th.

Remi Matthews, who has been a big part of Plymouth’s rise with a series of outstanding saves, was largely untroubled on Saturday and he made it seven clean sheets in 14 appearances for the Pilgrims.

Rovers’ defeat opened the door for Shrewsbury, who leapfrogged them and moved back into the League One automatic promotion places with a 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers.

Ben Godfrey played the full 90 minutes and Carlton Morris saw 74 minutes of action as Alex Rodman scored an 88th-minute winner for Sallop. The win moved them up to second in the division, two points behind leaders Wigan Athletic.

In the Championship, Yanic Wildschut played 55 minutes for Cardiff City in the Bluebirds’ impressive 4-1 win away at Leeds United. He was replaced by former City attacker Anthony Pilkington.

Adam Phillips played 67 minutes of Cambridge United’s 2-0 defeat away at Yeovil in League Two. Cambridge should have taken the lead when Phillips set up Billy Waters, but he shot wide of the post.

Goalkeeper Paul Jones was an unused substitute as Exeter City lost 1-0 away at table-toppers Luton Town in League Two.

Also in League Two, Diallang Jaiyesimi was an 89th-minute substitute as Grimsby Town drew 1-1 at home to Cheltenham Town. Former Canary Simeon Jackson opened the scoring for Grimsby.

In Germany, Marcel Franke played the full 90 minutes and helped Dynamo Dresden keep a clean sheet in their 2-0 win over Bochum in 2. Bundesliga.

In Holland, Todd Cantwell came on as a 63rd-minute substitute to make his debut for Fortuna Sittard. However, they fell to a surprising 2-0 defeat away at Volendam but stayed third in the Eerste Divisie.

In Scotland, Russell Martin suffered defeat as Rangers went down 2-1 at home to Hibs. Martin almost squeezed in a last-minute equaliser, but his effort was heroically blocked on the line by Ryan Porteous.

Aberdeen took advantage of Rangers’ slip with a 3-0 win over Hamilton Academical at Ibrox which sent them six points clear of Rangers in second place. Kenny McLean, who scored twice in the Dons’ midweek win over Ross County, turned provider on Saturday when his powerful shot was blocked and Niall McGinn buried the rebound.

Also in the SPL, Steven Naismith played the full 90 minutes as his Hearts side beat St Johnstone 1-0.

In the English National League Michee Efete helped Torquay to a 3-1 win at home to Barrow, with former Canary Grant Holt putting in 69 minutes for the visitors. The win lifted Torquay off the foot of the table.

Ebou Adams played the full 90 minutes as Leyton Orient won 4-3 at Dover Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Trophy.
