Under-23s edge seven-goal thriller with Newcastle

14 January 2018

Norwich City Under-23s fought their way to a determined 4-3 win over Newcastle United in Premier League 2 at Colney Training Centre on Sunday.

Matt Gill fielded a rotated squad in the wake of the Under-18s' FA Youth Cup exploits on Friday, with senior experience coming in the form of Michael McGovern, James Husband and Steven Naismith.

The latter was the first to make an impact on the game, putting City in front 12 minutes in when he converted Tristan Abrahams' cross at the back-post.

Newcastle responded however, with centre-back Owen Bailey reacting quickest to a loose ball to fire his side level just after the hour-mark.

With the interval looming, the goals began to fly in, with United taking the lead for the first time on 42 minutes through Mo Sangare's incisive finish.

Naismith's second of the afternoon restored parity almost immediately after, only for the visitors to take a lead into the break when Macaulay Gillesphey looped a header home.

City came out strongly in the second half, dictating the tempo and earning an early penalty when the lively Abrahams was hauled down in the box.

Todd Cantwell duly stepped up to convert the spot-kick, before Abrahams netted a superly taken winner 16 minutes from time to complete the turnaround.
