Matt Gill hopes his Under-23s will turn their pre-season defeat at Colchester Untied into a positive going forward.
The Development Squad visited Colchester United's Training Ground in the third of five pre-season matches but they suffered their first defeat, going down 2-0 at Florence Park.
Speaking post-match, Gill said: "Obviously we had a really good tour. We then had a rest day on Sunday and did a bit of training yesterday, leading into the Colchester game.
"We started the game a little passively. From some of the stuff we were good at in Germany with our pressing, closing down and organisation, we didn't do that quite as well against Colchester.
"It was a disappointing first-half conceding two sloppy goals, but in the second-half we had a bit more presence with our penetration going forward and showed some good resilience at trying to get back into the game.
"I do think if we were still playing next week, we still probably wouldn't have scored. It was one of them days.
"From an overall point-of-view, it's a good thing to happen to the boys. We had a great tour culminating in a good win over Borussia Dortmund so if anything it's grounded the lads again and made them recognise what's important.
"They are young lads and there is going to be some inconsistency."
Next up for the Under-23s is a match against Sutton United on Saturday (12pm kick-off) and Gill is looking forward to seeing his youngsters face a senior test.
"We went there last year and had a really good test against them. We'll be taking a young team there again and it will be a great test for them."
"After today, the lads will recover and get ready to go again and put to bed a disappointing game against Colchester."
