Norwich City secure promotion to the Premier League with Blackburn victory

27 April 2019

Norwich City secured promotion to the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

City dominated the opening 45 minutes and should have had a lead much bigger than they got. Crisp strike from Marco Stiepermann and Mario Vrancic put them two ahead, but Rovers kept the game alive through Lewis Travis.

City had chances to extend their lead in the second half with Emi Buendia and Stiepermann both going within a whisker of making it three, but neither could take their chance. The Canaires saw the game out, winning 2-1 and securing promotion to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke made one change to his starting eleven for the Stoke draw on Easter Monday with Vrancic coming in to replace the injured Tom Trybull. Elsewhere, Alex Tettey returned to make up the substitutes.

City began on the front foot and dominated possession in the opening five minutes without threatening Rovers goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler. Stiepermann had a sight on six minutes after a cushioned Teemu Pukki lay-off but he could only blast over from the edge of the area.

Moments later, Onel Hernandez went closer than Stiepermann. He was fed by Jamal Lewis from the left and shot low and true but the effort went just wide.

City’s dominance was rewarded on 13 minutes. Buendia was clear in a central position and he fed Hernandez to his left. The winger cut in and had his shot blocked but the ball was eventually worked to Stiepermann who drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Buendia went close to adding a second on 16 minutes, shooting from a similar position but inches wide. Carrow Road was in full voice and were screaming for a red card shortly after when Pukki was brought down through on goal. However, referee Andrew Madley gave a only gave yellow card to Darragh Lenihan.

City doubled their lead on 21 minutes via a left-footed piledriver from Vrancic. The ball was destined for the top-right corner as soon as it left his boot. This came after Pukki almost bundled the ball home inside the area but somehow Leutwiler kept the ball out.

Completely against the run of play, Blackburn reduced the arrears when Travis found the bottom corner with a precise finish from the edge of the box.

Stiepermann missed a golden opportunity on 25 minutes to restore the two-goal advantage when he fired Pukki’s cutback straight at Leutwiler.

The early carnage halted somewhat as the game approached half-time but it was City who looked more likely to add to the scoreline as Buendia shot over from a narrow angle after neat footwork allowed him room for a strike. On 42 minutes, Hernandez found himself with space in the box but he curled inches wide of the far post.

Ciy continued where they left off after the interval and almost immediately added a third. A cross from Stiepermann looped into the air and was brought down by Buendia but his acrobatic, overhead kick was well-saved by Leutwiler low to his right.

Moments later, Hernandez was sent clear by Vrancic and he cut inside former City man Elliott Bennett before sending a right-footed effort against the crossbar.

With each passing minute, the nerves grew with the home crowd knowing if the score stayed the same, City would clinch promotion.

The referee blew his whistle which meant Norwich City secured promotion to the Premier League.
