Kenny McLean believes Norwich City’s 1-0 pre-season victory over Toulouse on Saturday will give them much-needed momentum going into next weekend’s Premier League opener against Liverpool.
City dominated for large parts of the game against their Ligue 1 opponents and McLean believes it’s a good sign with the regular season less than a week away.
“It was good to get back to winning and to take that momentum into next week,” he said. “It could have been a lot more, some of our play was excellent.
“The intensity of our play was what the manager [Daniel Farke] asked for and that’s what everybody gave.
“It was just disappointing not to get more goals but it was good day’s work.”
The triumph ensured City bounced back from their midweek defeat to Atalanta and the ability to recover from setbacks will be key for the Canaries this year, according to McLean.
“Pre-season isn’t about results but no matter when you play or who you play against, you want to win. It’s the mentality we’ve got.
“It showed last season and we need to take that into this season. It’s something we’ve been speaking about over pre-season.
“It was disappointing losing in midweek, the scoreline was a bit flattering for them. Today was about the performance and getting ready for next week but it was good to get a result as well.
“We are creating, I just hope we’re saving the goals for the season. The attacking play was good, it was just that final bit and final finish that we missed.
“It will come, we have plenty of goals at the top end of the pitch. On another day, we could have had four or five.
“We were excellent defensively as well. They didn’t trouble us too much, they only had a few half-chances. We looked solid as a unit and defended from the front. We’ve worked on that a lot and it bodes well for the season.”
