Moritz Leitner says Norwich City were keen to give the Carrow Road support something to cheer in their first Premier League game of the season.
The Canaries certainly did that as they notched their first victory of the 2019-20 Premier League with a comprehensive display against Newcastle United.
A Teemu Pukki hat-trick helped City on their way to the 3-1 victory, with Jonjo Shelvey’s late strike only a consolation goal.
Speaking to canaries.co.uk post-match, Leitner said: “We deserved this win. The team did a great job today. We can relax today and enjoy the evening.
“It was a really good game with a nice result. The last goal happens, we can learn out of this game and go on.
“We always have to work hard and especially in our first home game today, we wanted to show our supporters that we are fighting for them to win the games.
“We want to get points in each and every game. Our first game against Liverpool, we had some good scenes and played some nice football but we stood there with nothing.
“But today we got three points and that’s why we play football.”
Pukki will rightfully get most of the plaudits from the supporters and media but Leitner was eager to stress the importance of the team performance.
“Well done to Teemu. He is fantastic, scored three times but it’s not only him. We worked so well and even for Teemu, he also worked so hard.
“He’s our first defender. He did an amazing job for the team.
“We can celebrate a little bit but we have to go on. It’s just our first win and the next team is waiting.”
