Onel Hernandez: We are 100% ready for Liverpool

8 August 2019

Onel Hernandez says Norwich City are “100% ready” for their opening clash of the 2019-20 Premier League at Liverpool on Friday night.

City have endured a productive pre-season following their Sky Bet Championship triumph last year with seven games and six weeks of intense training.

Hernandez believes the Canaries are well-prepared for their first task of the year: “Pre-season was very hard but this is how they always are.

“You have a lot of games and a lot of training sessions. We worked a lot in the gym as well and it was very tough.

“But I think we’ve taken good results from the games and we’ve worked hard to be prepared for the season.

“We are 100% ready. The [Head] Coach [Daniel Farke] has prepared us very well for the season.

“I’m very excited because I’ve never been in such a situation. We are about to play in the best league in the world.

“To play against Liverpool at Anfield will be an incredible feeling. Everyone is excited and happy to be in this situation. Everyone wants to give their best.”

Hernandez will become the first Cuban to play in the Premier League if he features at Anfield.

It’s a stat that makes him immensely proud: “I’ve heard this a few times and it’s incredible.

“I’m very proud of this and I’ve had so many messages from Cubans around the world. Everyone is proud of me and I hope I can perform well and show everyone that Cuba has good football players, not just in baseball and basketball.

“It will be good for the image of football in Cuba. They don’t support football that much and it will be good for that.”

City silenced plenty of doubters last year by winning the Championship and Hernandez thinks it will once again be important for the team to ignore the noise.

“We don’t have to listen to all the noise or to people who speak about us. At the end of the day, we have to do our work and then we’ll see.

“I trust the team and the Club. The lads will work extremely hard this year and we won’t listen to the outside."
