Onel Hernandez will miss the next three months of action with a lateral meniscus tear suffered after a trip at his home.
However, a scan in the coming days could reveal much worse with Head Coach Daniel Farke fearing that Hernandez may have torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), resulting in a much longer period on the sidelines.
There were more negatives delivered by Farke at his pre-Newcastle United press conference. He revealed Josip Drmic (hamstring) will definitely miss Saturday, with Kenny McLean (back) also a major doubt for the Carrow Road curtain-raiser. Young striker Adam Idah (back) is also a doubt for the visit of the Magpies.
As for long-term absentees Timm Klose and Christoph Zimmermann (both knee), they are still unavailable for selection, however Farke expects Klose to return to training next week.
On Zimmermann, Farke admits a return is still a few weeks off as the German suffered a setback in his rehab.
There were some positives in what was a rather bleak press conference injury-wise. Alex Tettey has returned from his injury and is available for Newcastle.
Meanwhile, recent signing Ibrahim Amadou is also available after getting a full week of training under his belt, however Farke believes the Frenchman may only be a topic for the bench.
To finish, Farke said that Mario Vrancic is available after watching on from the bench at Anfield. The Bosnian was missed all of pre-season through injury.
