City ease to victory over Birmingham

18 January 2019

Three first half goals secured the win for Norwich as they beat Birmingham City 3-1 at Carrow Road.

The Canaries took an early lead with a Teemu Pukki goal, but quickly found themselves level as Che Adams lashed the ball into the back of the net a minute later.

But Norwich weren’t finished there as Mario Vrancic and Tom Trybull netted two more goals in the 22nd and 25th minutes, to give City a comfortable lead to see out the game.

Daniel Farke made two changes to his starting eleven, with Tom Trybull and Marco Stiepermann replacing Todd Cantwell and Alex Tettey, who is out with an injury. Stiepermann was back in the squad after picking up an injury at Griffin Park on New Year’s Day, while Cantwell was named on the bench.

Norwich started off on the front foot with plenty of possession and moved the ball around well. However, it was Birmingham who got the first dangerous cross in with a but Tim Krull did well to save Maikel Kieftenbeld’s ball with his feet.

The Canaries continued racing forward with a good ball from Ben Godfrey feeding Teemu Pukki in the box, but his low shot hit the side-netting. Norwich got the early lead they were looking for with Pukki slotting home Jamal Lewis’ low cross across the box.

But that lead didn’t last for long, with Birmingham getting the equaliser just a minute later with a powerful strike from Che Adams.

The game continued to move at a lively tempo and within 10 minutes Norwich had added another two goals to the board. The first came from Mario Vrancic who found the bottom corner with a low strike from 25 yards. And 26 minutes in Tom Trybull got the Canaries’ third as he headed home an Emi Buendia cross.

A minute later and Norwich looked for their fourth, but Pukki’s low ball at goal rolled just inches wide.

Norwich were forced into an early substitution with Cantwell on for Buendia who limped off the pitch. Another chance came for the Canaries with Onel Hernandez in space on the left, but after cutting inside his shot went wide of the near post.

Krul was called into action just a few minutes ahead of the half-time break, pushing a shot from Jota just wide of the post. Jota took the resulting corner, but Jutkiewicz sent it over the bar under pressure from the City defence.

Norwich came back out with the same momentum they gathered in the first half, with an early chance for Vrancic after Hernandez picked him out in the box, however his strike curled just over. Hernandez surged forward again with Cantwell and Pukki waiting for the cross in the box, but the Birmingham defence closed down the Cuban to deny him a way through.

The visitors made their first change 10 minutes into the second half, with Craig Gardner replacing Kieftenbeld, followed by their second with Isaac Vassell on for Jutkiewicz.

Birmingham enjoyed a bit more of the ball, however it was Norwich who looked the more dangerous of the sides, with further chances coming for Cantwell and Pukki although neither tested Camp into making a save. Stiepermann then stepped up with a chance of his own after a lovely ball through from Pukki, but Harlee Dean got back quickly to block the shot.

At the other end a challenge between Adams and Christoph Zimmermann resulted in a corner for the Blues, but the referee noticed pushing in the box and awarded City Norwich the ball.

Birmingham made their final change at 70 minutes, with Connor Mahoney replacing Jota.

Five minutes later and Aarons made a brilliant run forward, shaking off a tackle from Gardner as he made his break, but his cross didn’t quite reach Cantwell waiting in the box.

Farke brought on Jordan Rhodes with five minutes remaining, and the City striker was in the action straight away looking to be in on goal, however Dean won the battle to deny Norwich a fourth. The Canaries final change saw Kenny McLean on for Onel Hernandez with just a few minutes remaining.
