Kenny McLean on Norwich City's pre-season opener

15 July 2019

Kenny McLean revealed his enjoyment at being back out on the pitch in a yellow and green shirt during Norwich City’s 2-2 pre-season draw with DSC Arminia Bielefeld.

McLean was on for the full 90 minutes with City only having eight substitutes in Gütersloh, but he was still pleased to get straight into the thick of the action.

Speaking to, McLean said: “It was a tough game and we were always going to be a little bit rusty at times and not sharp as we like but a lot of the boys got minutes under their belt and on the legs so it’s progression in pre-season.

“It’s been a long time, we spoke about that before the game with it being a couple of months since we’ve been on the pitch together so it’s good to be back out there.

“Of course, it was tough for the legs but it’s good to get minutes and be back out there."

It was certainly a fiery encounter in Gütersloh for City’s pre-season opener, with three goals, two unfortunate injuries and a red card in a busy first 45 minutes.

Bielefeld took the lead midway through the first-half but then had a man sent off – Joan Simun Edmundsson seeing red after picking up a second yellow card.

City roared back to lead at half-time after goals from Dennis Srbeny and Josip Drmic on debut from the penalty spot.

However, Bielefeld ended up taking a share of the spoils when substitute Joamine Consbruch curled home an equaliser with just four minutes to play.

“It was quite naughty at times but they are close to getting back to their season so they are playing for positions, it was always going to be expected that way but were going to have to make do with those games," McLean continued.

“It was quite naughty at times on players like Emi [Buendia] but I’m sure he’s more than used to it.

“We could do without injuries and it was a bit of a blow as we’ve already got defensive injuries but with Louis and Ben off injured. Hopefully they aren’t too bad.

“We just need to keep our heads down and keep working away. It happens quite a lot in pre-season as you do a lot of work and your body is just adapting to it again but hopefully the guys aren’t too bad. To get everybody fit would be great but we just need to keep working hard.”
