Norwich City's pre-season tour of Germany drew to a close with a 2-1 victory over FC Schalke 04 at the Frimo Stadion in Lotte.
Teemu Pukki fired City into an early lead, finishing neatly after a through ball from Patrick Roberts before Rabbi Matondo replied for Schalke just after half-time.
A deflected Moritz Leitner strike restored City's advantage on the hour mark and City had the better chances to add to the scoreline afterwards. However, 2-1 was enough to earn them an impressive result against one of the top sides in Germany.
City enjoyed lots of possession in the opening exchanges but the Schalke press was leaving them with few chances to push forward.
However, on 13 minutes, the former Schalke man Pukki beat the offside trap and latched onto a Patrick Roberts pass before sliding the ball under Markus Schubert.
It was almost two moments later as City won the ball back on the halfway line and stormed forward. Stiepermann fed Pukki and he beat his marker before being forced wide and subsequently having his effort stopped by the keeper.
Schalke then began to assert themselves on the game but struggled to test Tim Krul. Both Steven Skrzyski and Levent Mercan had efforts from the edge of the box but they were not remotely close to threatening the scoreline.
Instead, it was City who went close to scoring once more. A misplaced pass saw Stiepermann profit from the error and he played Pukki in but this time, he could only roll his effort wide.
Moments later at the other end, Benito Raman tried to squeeze the ball home from a tight angle, however, Krul did well to block his shot.
Schalke equalised at the start of the second-half with substitutes Ahmed Kutucu and Matondo combining on the break. The former’s shot was saved by City sub Michael McGovern but the ball fell kindly for Matondo to tap home.
City almost regained the lead within minutes but a firm Stiepermann strike was beaten away by Schubert. The same man went close again moments later but he lost his footing as he shot.
City continued to look the more likely at scoring next as Cantwell fired inches wide after neat footwork from Roberts before Leitner’s strike took a huge deflection to fly past Schubert and give the Canaries’ the lead once more.
Hernandez went closest to adding to City's lead late on but Schubert was equal to his low effort. However, the goals from Pukki and Leitner were enough to see the Canaries triumph in their final tour fixture.
