Norwich City suffer first pre-season defeat at hands of Brentford

24 July 2019

Norwich City suffered their first defeat of pre-season on Wednesday evening with a 3-1 defeat to Brentford at Colney Training Centre.

Emi Buendia's superb strike on nine minutes gave City the lead but Brentford quickly responded when Emiliano Marcondes neatly finished from close range.

Both sides had chances in the second-half but Brentford were the more clinical - Ollie Watkins and Ethan Pinnock seeing them to victory with two goals after the interval.

After an even start, City took the lead on nine minutes as Buendia took aim from the edge of the area and delightfully curled the ball into the bottom corner past David Raya.

However, intricate football from Brentford saw them equalise instantly when Marcondes broke the offside and rounded Ralf Fährmann before slotting home.

City then had a good chance to regain the lead when Onel Hernandez was played through. However, he was forced wide after dribbling past Raya and could only hit the side netting.

The game calmed after that action-packed spell with the fixture being played in 35 degree heat.

Brentford threatened next after an added drinks break when, on 38 minutes, Watkins managed to get a shot away in the area, however, his low strike was smothered by Fährmann.

However, City finished the half strongly with Hernandez having a goalbound effort deflected wide and Josip Drmic having a low strike caught well by Raya.

At the break, Daniel Farke introduced Tim Krul and Marco Stiepermann, replacing Fährmann and Drmic.

City enjoyed lots of possession after the interval but it was Brentford who went close at adding to the scoreline on the hour mark. Watkins broke down the right and cut inside but twice he was denied by Krul.

Watkins wasn’t be denied a second time though as, on 69 minutes, he latched onto a cross from substitute Marcus Forss and swept the ball past Krul to give the visitors the advantage for the first time in the game.

City set about looking for a route back into the match but Brentford were standing firm. Philip Heise had a set-piece on the right shortly after another drinks break but he fired straight at the visiting goalkeeper.

Watkins turned provider on 78 minutes, crossing from a free-kick for substitute Pinnock to stab home at the back post.

In between the goals, City introduced Max Aarons, Jamal Lewis, Todd Cantwell, Patrick Roberts, Tom Trybull and Adam Idah.

City piled on the pressure in the closing stages. Aarons hit the post following a intelligent backheel from Cantwell but they couldn't find the net.
