Daniel Farke: Commitment and desire was key to Boro victory

30 March 2019

Daniel Farke repeatedly praised his Norwich City side’s togetherness and spirit after their crucial 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

City took the lead in the 54th-minute through Onel Hernandez and had to withstand plenty of long balls and set-pieces in the final half-an-hour.

But they did so and the City Head Coach was full of praise for his squad as a whole as they stretched their lead at the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

“It was a massive win today,” he said. “It’s an unbelievably tough place to go. Tony Pulis sides are so well-structured and it’s so difficult to create chances against them.

“Especially after the international break, we’ve not been able to work as a group for two weeks. Some lads arrived pretty, pretty late and it’s always a bit complicated when you have to work on this topic to create chances against this side.

“In the end, I just can praise my lads. It was massive win today. I was a bit concerned that we missed a few chances in the first-half and also after our first goal that perhaps it’s not going to be enough because against Middlesbrough, you have to be unbelievably effective.

“They are always a big threat out of set pieces and the long throw-ins. But we defended everything with a big commitment today. It was an unbelievable team effort and we’re all happy.”

The Boss cited key moments in the final ten minutes, with Christoph Zimmermann and Ben Godfrey committing crucial blocks to preserve the lead.

“These moments are from role models and signs of our way at that moment,” he added. “There was unbelievable togetherness and commitment. I brought Timm Klose in and he was there with two or three important headers.

“All the lads on the bench were there with such a big fighting spirit and they wanted this win so much. I just can praise the whole squad because this togetherness and spirit is so important.

“When you have this greediness to be successful together, you have such scenes where you are there with an important block in the last minute.

“It’s totally down to the attitude of my lads and their unbelievable desire today.”
