International round-up: Pukki helps Finland secure victory

27 March 2019

Teemu Pukki helped Finland earn their first win in 2020 UEFA European Championship qualification, providing an assist in their win over Armenia on Tuesday.

Fourteen minutes into the game, Pukki backheeled the ball to Robin Lod who then played a defence splitting pass back to the City striker, who then sent a delightful chip to the back post where the ball was turned in by Fredrik Jensen.

Finland went on to add another in the 78th minute, securing a crucial three points with Pukki remaining on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

Timm Klose was an unused substitution for Switzerland in their entertaining 3-3 draw against Denmark. The Swiss went 3-0 ahead 76 minutes in when Breel Embolo looked to have capped off a fine display, but three Denmark goals after the 84th minute meant it ended all square.

England’s Under-20s lost 1-0 against Portugal, who are one of the Under-20s World Cup favourites. Ben Godfrey featured for the full 90 minutes and partnered Ben Wilmot at centre-back but the pair were unable to keep out Pedro Correia who put the visitors ahead in the second-half.

Max Aarons started and played the opening 45 minutes for England’s Under-19s in their 2-2 draw against Denmark. Despite coming from behind twice, the draw now means they won’t be competing in this summer’s Under-19s European Championships.

England went into the game knowing a win would secure a place in this summer’s Under-19s European Championships, but Denmark proved to be a tough test for the Three Lions. Ian Poveda-Ocampo and Marc Guehi both scored for the hosts, but they were unable to find that crucial winning goal.

Elsewhere at Under-19s level, Anis Mehmeti started in Albania’s 2-1 loss against North Macedonia in an international friendly. Armando Broja’s first half goal meant Albania went ahead, but the Red and Blacks were unable to keep a hold of the lead and goals either side of half time saw North Macedonia complete the turn-around.

Tom Dickson-Peters scored in Scotland’s Under-17s 1-1 draw against Poland on Tuesday. The City Under-18s striker was brought on in the 65th minute replacing Stuart McKinstry and went on to score the equaliser in the 82nd minute.

Dickson-Peters got on the end of Andrew Winter’s inviting cross before the ball looped off his head, over the keeper and into the back of the net.

Andrew Omobamidele featured for the full 90 minutes in the Republic of Ireland’s Under-17s 2-1 loss against Finland in their preparations for this summer’s Under-17s European Championships.
