Loan Round-Up: Spyrou debuts for Wrexham

25 March 2019

Ant Spyrou made his debut for Wrexham on Saturday, just days after joining the National League side on loan for the rest of the season.

The young striker came on in the 70th minute with Wrexham trailing 1-0 to opponents Hartlepool after Josh Hawkes’ first-half penalty.

Spyrou couldn’t help the Red Dragons find an equaliser but will hope to make a real impact in their final six league games as they aim to achieve promotion back to the EFL.

The defeat leaves the Welsh side third in the table, just a point off leaders Leyton Orient, with most of the sides around them having games in hand.

Another of Wrexham’s promotion rivals, AFC Fylde, were in FA Trophy action at the weekend and they booked their trip to the final at Wembley with a 3-2 second-leg victory over Stockport County.

Timi Odusina (pictured) was introduced as a late substitute as the Coasters defended their narrow lead successfully after Alex Reid had put them back in front with just a minute left on the clock.

Mason Bloomfield missed the game as he continues his recovery from a broken arm. The City striker will hope to be back in time for the final against Leyton Orient on Sunday, May 19.

Across the Atlantic, Caleb Richards helped Tampa Bay Rowdies continue their unbeaten start to the USL Championship season with a 1-1 draw at Saint Louis.

Richards once again played the full 90 minutes as Sebsatian Guenzatti’s 75th minute penalty kick cancelled out Sam Fink’s first-half opener.

With the international break in full swing, there was no action for City’s players on loan in the Sky Bet Championship, Scottish Premiership and 2.Bundesliga.

Fleetwood Town’s game with Sunderland was postponed because of players on international duty, meaning James Husband enjoyed a weekend off.

Both Matt Jarvis (Walsall) and Tristan Abrahams (Exeter City) were absent from action with Walsall being beaten at home to Barnsley and Exeter picking up a late win at Notts County.

Dordrecht were heavily beaten in the Eerste Divisie on Friday, going down 8-1 at Eindhoven. Simon Power was absent from the squad after picking up an injury whilst on international duty with Republic of Ireland’s Under-21s.
