Loan Round-Up: Bushiri sends Blackpool through to EFL Trophy knockout stages

11 November 2019

Rocky Bushiri scored the winning goal in stoppage time for Blackpool in Tuesday’s Trophy game against Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21s, while five other Norwich City loanees were also in action over the last week.

With the game petering out to a goalless draw, 19-year-old Bushiri smashed a shot into the bottom left corner from close range in the 93rd minute, sending the Seasiders through to the Round of 32 in the competition.

Carlisle United and Morecambe still have to play each other in Northern Group G, but Blackpool will finish in the top two regardless of the outcome in that game.

James Husband was also in cup action for Blackpool over the last seven days, albeit the FA Cup first round, as they convincingly beat Morecambe 4-1 at home on Saturday. Husband played the full 90 minutes of that game.

Elsewhere in the FA Cup, Carlton Morris was part of the Rotherham United side to put three past Maidenhead United. The National League side took the lead, but Rotherham came from behind to prevent them from reaching the second round of the tournament for the first time in history.

There was late drama for Diallang Jaiyesimi at Swindon Town, who were unfortunate to only manage an away draw at Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup on Saturday. Both goals in the 1-1 draw came in stoppage time, Swindon thinking they’d won it with their strike in the 91stminute, before Cheltenham forced a replay with an equaliser in the 93rd.

Meanwhile, there was League One action for a couple of Norwich City loanees fighting to break into the play-off places. Sean Raggett played 90 minutes of Portsmouth’s 4-1 win at home to Southend United, winning the penalty for their third goal after being fouled by Rob Kiernan.

Louis Thompson came on in the 65th minute to replace David Edwards for Shrewsbury Town as they beat Peterborough 1-0 at home on Tuesday.

Portsmouth are now 13th in the division, five points behind the play-offs, while Shrewsbury are 11th and just two points below those places.
