International round-up: Pukki and Drmic both suffer defeats

13 October 2019

Teemu Pukki and Josip Drmic both suffered a disappointing evening with their nations on Saturday.

Pukki played the full 90 minutes as Finland were comfortably beaten 4-1 at Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia bossed most of the encounter and cruised to a 4-0 lead thanks to goals from Izet Hajrovic, Miralen Pjanic (2) and Armin Hodzic. Joel Pohjanpalo netted a late consolation for the Finns.

Qualfication for EURO 2020 is still in Finland's hands, though. With three games of Group J to go, they play Armenia in Turku on Tuesday evening before hosting Liechtenstein and travelling to Greece for their final two qualifiers next month.

As for Switzerland, they were narrowly beaten away to Denmark in Group D, suffering a blow to their qualification hopes in the process.

Yussuf Poulsen scored with just six minutes left on the clock, with Drmic being introduced four minutes later but a late throw of the dice by the Swiss wasn't enough to salvage anything.

Switzerland are currently third in Group D, four points behind leading duo Republic of Ireland and Denmark, but they do have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Under-23s goalkeeper Archie Mair kept a clean sheet as Scotland Under-19s beat Andorra 2-0 in qualification for the U19s EUROs next summer.

The victory, coupled with their 2-2 draw with Belarus on Thursday, has them second in Group 4 ahead of their final qualifier against Germany on Tuesday.

On Friday, Mair's goalkeeping teammate Daniel Barden, currently on loan at Bury Town, turned out for Wales Under-19s but they suffered a 3-1 friendly defeat at home to Austria.

Also on Friday, Andrew Omobamidele played 82 minutes of Republic of Ireland U19s 1-0 defeat against Denmark.
