Norwich City Under-21s captain Akin Famewo has outlined the importance of a good performance against Oxford United in the Leasing.com Trophy tonight.
The young Canaries travel to Kassam Stadium for the first game in a group consisting of Oxford, Crawley Town, and Portsmouth, and Famewo sees the game as a good chance for City’s young players to show what they’re capable of against League One opposition.
“I’m buzzing for tonight’s game,” he said. “A lot of the boys are because it’s a great opportunity to show ourselves and show that we’re ready to play men’s football.
“The opening four league games have gone well. They could have gone better because you always want to win every game, but it’s been a good learning curve for us.
“We’re a new group so we’re all learning from each other. For a lot of players, it’s a new way of playing but we’re now putting that into action and developing in each game.
“We’re all gelling quickly. Going on tour was a great experience for us because we spent a lot of time together and were able to learn how we play.”
Famewo will be leading City out as captain of David Wright’s side tonight, and insists he’ll be able to help his teammates out with the mental approach ahead of the game.
“If any of the boys are nervous, I can help ease them or rile them up. This is a great competition for us to show what we’re about, so as captain I hope I can use my experience to help them get through the game.
“I’m really enjoying wearing the armband. From a young age, I’ve always been told I’ve got leadership qualities so now is a good opportunity for me to put them into action and hopefully lead the team to wins.”
