In Focus: Emi Buendia

24 April 2020

In his first season in the Premier League, Norwich City’s Argentinian midfield maestro Emi Buendia has impressed many throughout the 2019-2020 campaign.

Able to find a pass from nothing, or dribble his way through the masses, what exactly are Buendia’s best performances so far this season? We’ve narrowed it down to his top three… ⬇

3. Manchester City (H)

When Buendia’s Man City performance is his third-best all season, you know you’re in for some incredibly high ratings.

Needing no introduction, this game was truly a special day for City players and fans alike. Toppling the Premier League’s 2018-2019 reigning champions early on in the season to take three points is a reality some teams can only dream of.

Buendia was absolutely essential in this win, providing his slick passing, movement, and eye for an attack in every minute of the 83 he played. Bagging himself two assists in this fixture, one a pinpoint corner to find Kenny McLean, the other a capitalisation on a Nicolas Otamendi mistake to set up Teemu Pukki, the Argentine truly played out of his skin in this game.

The truth is, without him, the victory would’ve been fairly unlikely, especially since he set up two of the three goals! This key performance was a fair justification to give the midfielder an 8.88 rating from Whoscored.com (We told you, you’re in for some high ratings!).

2. Wolverhampton Wanderers (H)

Although largely this game was a slight disappointment after Wolves managed to turn the scores around, credit is still due to relevant performances, such as Buendia’s.

Bringing his usual outlet of creativity with the ball at his feet, Buendia left defenders clueless as to his game plan; pass or dribble? Either was a lethal option to give the Argentine, and the Wolves rearguard found that out for themselves when he skipped past them.

Nearly every Buendia attack was successful, seeing countless set-ups for his team around him. The only performance matching him came from Rui Patricio, who managed to stop all but one effort on goal!

The result was by no means a fair reflection of the performance City put in, but positives can always be taken. One of the main positives from this game was the team performance and quality, Buendia alone was rated at an unbelievable 9.26 for this game from Whoscored.com!

1. Crystal Palace (H)

Yet another result that realistically deserved more, this Buendia performance against Crystal Palace was something special.

Some fancy one-two passing and light footwork set up Todd Cantwell nicely early on, allowing him to give City the lead over the Eagles by the fourth minute, letting Canaries fans in attendance and watching from home know just what type of Buendia performance they were about to see.

Not only able to attack, Buendia could be found dropping back to defend often, managing to find tackle after tackle to win the ball back and start a counter of his own.

Regardless of the result, this truly was a great performance from the midfielder, by far one of his most all-round performances in a City shirt. Whoscored.com’s rating for the Argentine clearly agrees, after giving him an incredible 9.59 rating for this game, without even finding the back of the net!
