Classy Canaries take all three points against West Ham U18s

12 December 2020

Norwich City Under-18s got back on track with a sensational 3-0 win over West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

The Under-18s fielded a young side against the Hammers, first-year scholars such as Alex Matos, Ken Aboh, Lewis Shipley and Brad Hills all getting minutes in the clash.

The hosts had the first chance of the game in just the third minute as they passed their way around the City backline, firing at Sam Blair from the edge of the box and hitting the outside of the post, deflecting away from danger.

City didn’t take long to reply, Alex Matos taking a great cushioned touch in the Hammers’ box, the forward slipping as he let his shot fly, seeing the effort spill wide of the target.

Some neat passing play from the Canaries saw them work their way up from Blair all the way to Oscar Thorn, his shot also barely wide of the post in the eleventh minute.

An excellent run from Matos saw the nimble forward past his man, setting Thorn up in the 18-yard box with yet another shot, this time the effort flying just high of the crossbar.

No more than a minute later, Thorn made sure his third shot found its target. Matos, picking up a Brad Hills long ball nicely, was the man to set Thorn up again in front of goal, the young forward picking out the bottom corner for the opener.

A quiet but comfortable 20 minutes saw the first half to its dying moments, before City struck again for a second goal as the break approached.

Hitting the Hammers with a fast-break counter-attack after defending a corner, Serine Sanneh was tested at his near post by the Canaries, parrying the ball out to the centre of the box. It wasn’t away from danger yet, seeing Joe Duffy lace the ball into an open net to double City’s lead going into the second half.

The second half was more of the same for the Canaries. Thorn saw himself within a chance of finding his second goal of the afternoon after beating the Hammers’ offside trap, heading for the goal one-on-one with the ‘keeper. Thorn looked to tuck his shot away, but it was painfully stopped by the ‘keeper’s trailing leg.

Just another minute later, Matos found a worldie to make it three nonetheless. Picking the ball up on the left flank outside the 18-yard box, the young forward fired his curling effort into the far bottom corner with a wonderful finish to kill the game.

From then on it was another comfortable showing for the Canaries, dominating the remainder of the second half to see them bring all three points back to Norfolk.
