Norwich City Under-23s were beaten 3-1 by Sunderland U23s at the Academy of Light in the Premier League 2 Division 2 on Monday.
City had the first sight of goal early on, William Hondermarck winning the ball on the half-way line and carrying it forward for Reece McAlear to find Rob Nizet on the left wing. His cross was caught by Anthony Patterson.
Josh Hawkes was a menace for the hosts throughout the first half, crossing from the left wing in the 13th minute for Mitch Curry to head in at the near post.
Hawkes then looked to curl one into the far post from a similar position, but it was a simple catch for Jon McCracken.
Sunderland almost increased their lead in the 19th minute, Cieran Dunne putting the ball across the face of goal, but no-one was on the end of it.
Following a quiet 20-minute period, the Black Cats did make it 2-0 with another Hawkes assist, his shot turned in by Patrick Almond after McCracken had punched a cross clear.
A McAlear corner caused some trouble on the brink of half-time, but Sunderland dealt with the header from Jon Tomkinson and rebound by Matthew Dennis.
Josh Giurgi crossed for Dennis moments later, the latter curling high and wide, before Hawkes was denied by a fine McCracken save at the other end, the City 'keeper getting down to his left to keep the score at 2-0 Sunderland going into the break.
David Wright made two changes at half-time, Tony Springett and Eddie Jackson coming on for Giurgi and Nelson Khumbeni respectively. Jackson slotted in at centre-back, allowing Zach Dronfield to move up to midfield.
The Canaries responded well, pulling one back early in the second half as Ethen Vaughan's right-wing cross was headed in by Hondermarck.
At the other end, Hawkes received a cross and cut inside onto his right foot, but McCracken made a comfortable save.
Brandon Taylor then shot over the bar following a Sunderland counter, before the hosts won the following goal-kick and Curry rounded McCracken to put the ball in an empty net for 3-1.
With just under 20 minutes remaining, Nizet played a nice one-two with Hondermarck and picked out Dennis with a low, driven cross, but his shot was caught by Patterson.
City looked promising down the left again through Nizet with full-time approaching, Abu Kamara gathering his cross but being crowded out and seeing his shot deflected behind for a corner.
Nizet then went for goal himself, coming inside onto his right foot and looking to catch Patterson out at his near post, but the 'keeper got down quickly to save.
