City defeated 4-0 at Old Trafford

11 January 2020

Norwich City were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United on what was a tough afternoon at Old Trafford.

The Canaries made a solitary enforced change following their most recent Premier League outing against Crystal Palace.

Trailing to a Marcus Rashford goal heading into the half time interval, only a superb save from David De Gea prevented Todd Cantwell from levelling the scores.

Adam Idah was in for a maiden league start in senior football, replacing the injured Teemu Pukki.

And Norwich made a steady start to the game, as the hosts saw much of the early possession but struggled to make inroads against a stubborn yellow rearguard.

But after a pretty eventless opening half-hour, United eventually found a way through.

Juan Mata found space on the right touchline, before drifting infield and clipping a cross in towards the far post. Rashford ghosted in to convert from point blank range.

In truth, it was largely one-way traffic, but again, the Norwich backline, expertly marshalled by skipper Grant Hanley, weathered the storm.

It took until the 44th minute for the Canaries to muster their first attempt of note on the United goal.

Tim Krul sprung a quick counter, Emi Buendia releasing Todd Cantwell in the left channel. He opened his body before seeing a finessed low effort towards the far corner repelled by David De Gea.

But what was already an uphill task became a whole lot more difficult just minutes after the restart following a quickfire United double.

Brandon Williams escaped in the left channel and was upended inside the area by the onrushing Tim Krul. Rashford converted from the resulting penalty kick.

And a United third arrived on 55 minutes following a quick corner kick. Mata received the ball, before clipping into the area where Martial rose highest to nod into the far corner.

City responded with a double substitution on 65 minutes, as Onel Hernandez and Ibrahim Amadou entered the action.

But it was United substitute Greenwood who made the game’s next significant contribution, collecting a loose ball 30 yards from goal before picking out the bottom corner with a low left-footed drive.

The home side held onto the clean sheet, despite a late flurry of half-chances from City.
