Kieran Dowell: I've seen it all so far

30 July 2020

Kieran Dowell believes his previous Championship experience will benefit him after joining Norwich City on a three-year deal.

The 22-year-old midfielder has had loan spells across four clubs in the second tier over the past few seasons, impressing in his most recent stint at Wigan Athletic.

Overall, he’s made 78 Championship appearances with Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Derby County and the Latics.

“I’ve had three seasons in the Championship now. I’ve learned a lot, had good experiences and bad experiences,” he said to canaries.co.uk.

“I got promoted with Sheffield United and got relegated with Wigan Athletic so I’ve seen it all so far. Hopefully it’s all good stuff here at Norwich.”

Although there was collective disappointment with Wigan suffering relegation to League One, Dowell reflects on his spell at the DW Stadium with fondness.

“I had a not so good one [at Derby] and a good one [at Wigan], performance-wise. It was really sad the way it ended at Wigan because we were unreal from when I joined in January all the way to the end of the season.

“We didn’t quite make it in the end, but it was a positive end to the season performance-wise.”

Dowell revealed he spoke to a number of former teammates and friends about a potential move to Carrow Road, notably 2017-18 City player of the year James Maddison.

“James Maddison, who I’m close with and know from England, he only had good things to say about the club and the manager.

“He’s gone on to do brilliant things so he was a great person to speak to and get recommendations from.”
