Players, managers, owners - they all come and go in football, but magical memories of the club live on.
That’s why Utilita Energy has joined forces with acclaimed photographer Stuart Roy Clarke to create a warm, comforting slice of Norfolk nostalgia with the limited edition ‘We Love You Norwich’ 2021 calendar.
Every stunning image has a story to tell, encapsulating just what it means to support one of the country’s most welcoming clubs.
It’s for a good cause too with proceeds going to the UK’s biggest youth charity, The Prince’s Trust, whose work in helping vulnerable young people into education, training and jobs is needed now more than ever in these uncertain times.
In his 30-year love affair with football photography, Stuart has trekked the length and breadth of the country - and the friendly, family vibe at Carrow Road never fails to stir the emotions.
The Canaries have finished as high as third in the Premier League (1992-93) and have graced European competition, but no matter what their successes on the field, the homely atmosphere remains.
“Carrow Road’s capacity is just over 27,000 and it feels like they’ve got that many season-ticket holders because there’s such a wonderful warmth about the place,” says Stuart.
“And what I love about Norwich is that it’s very much a club in the present tense.
“They were a semi-professional side before joining the Football League in 1920 and didn’t really come to the fore until the mid-1900s. But, boy, have they taken on the role wonderfully with every game selling out.
“They’re the epitome of a family club with more youngsters and women in the crowd than I see elsewhere.”
Unsurprising that family feel is reflected in one of Stuart’s favourite images from the Utilita calendar. It’s an uplifting photo of a mother and daughter, backs to the camera, hugging each other while watching their beloved Canaries.
“It was taken on New Year’s Day this year. It was freezing cold, but I still felt the warmth,” smiles Stuart. “Norwich is one of those grounds where you don’t need the half-time Bovril, there’s warmth all around you and you feel part of one big family.”
Stuart’s other personal favourite, entitled ‘Castle and Mound’ is a world away from the cosiness of Carrow Road.
It captures the joyous scenes as fans congregated on the Castle mound to celebrate the old Division One title and promotion to the Premier League in 2004.
“The grand open-top bus tour was one of the best days of my life. Such a joyous occasion!” Stuart smiles.
“It took them hours to get round the city and when they finally arrived at the reception I was up on the balcony near Delia Smith.
“She saw me taking photos, handed me her camera and asked if I’d take a few for her. I’ve never seen them but I hope they were in focus and did the club proud!”
The Utilita 2021 calendar is sure to make Canary hearts sing.
“It was music to my ears that Utilita wanted to do a calendar capturing the culture of one English football’s ‘golden’ clubs,” says Stuart.
“It’s a thing of beauty for Norwich fans to display for 365 days, but the photos are so enduring that hopefully they won’t throw it away at the end of 2021, they’ll keep it as a memento.
“To be helping young people by raising money for The Prince’s Trust makes this calendar all the more special.”
