Match Preview: Norwich City v Preston North End

18 September 2020

Norwich City return to Carrow Road for the first time since July for the inaugural home game of the 2020-21 Championship season.

Our match preview takes a closer look at this weekend’s visitors, the officials in charge of the match, and how supporters can watch the action from home.

The opposition

After finishing last season ninth in the Championship, Alex Neil’s side had a relatively strong pre-season, which included draws against Tranmere Rovers, Burnley and Sheffield United, as well as a win against Salford City and defeat to Everton.

Among those friendlies came a 4-0 Carabao Cup first round win at home to Mansfield Town, but celebrations were somewhat hampered when the league campaign began.

Swansea City were the visitors at the Deepdale Stadium for the first league game of the season, and it was Morgan Gibbs-White who got the game’s only goal to take all three points back to Wales.

But Tuesday night's Carabao Cup second round game at Derby County brought better fortunes, with Preston winning 2-1 through a stoppage time penalty from Daniel Johnson.

In the 54 meetings between Norwich and Preston since 1961, there have been 21 Norwich wins, 17 Preston wins and 16 draws.

Last time we met, an Adam Idah hat-trick secured progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 win at the Deepdale Stadium in January 2020.

In Preston’s previous visit to Carrow Road, the Canaries emerged 2-0 victors thanks to goals from Teemu Pukki and Alexander Tettey.

Ref watch

John Brooks has been appointed to take charge of Saturday's game, with Akil Howson and Nick Greenhalgh his assistants and George Byrne the fourth official.

Brooks last officiated a Norwich City game for our thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Nottingham Forest in December 2018, when Onel Hernandez scored two goals in stoppage time to rescue a point.
