Norwich City midfielder Emi Buendia described the team’s promotion to the Premier League as an ‘amazing feeling’, despite their 3-1 loss to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday evening.
The Canaries took the lead early on thanks to Buendia’s finish, but the Cherries came back in the second half to take all three points.
Those points lost weren’t the midfielder's main focus, however, the Argentine instead discussing his jubilation to be back in the topflight, even though he found out a bit later than everyone else!
“It feels amazing, an unbelievable feeling. It was a hard season for everyone, it was short but we had many, many games in both league and cup games.
“But, before the game knowing you are back in the Premier League, this feeling is amazing. We wanted to win today, but the game was difficult. We are really happy to be back in the Premier League!
“In my case, I was sleeping! I knew nothing about the results, so when I woke up and I saw my phone, I had about 20 missed calls, lots of messages of congratulations. I checked my phone and saw we were promoted, that was amazing.
“We came to the game in a really, really good mood. We wanted to win the game, I’m proud of the effort of everyone in the game, with one less player everyone was amazing. We have an important game on Tuesday because with this team we want to be champions.”
Of course, the season wasn’t quite the same in an empty stadium, but Buendia says he’s hoping Canaries fans are celebrating how they can, wherever they are.
“The fans mean a lot to us, we dreamt that we were promoted today, and the stadium would be busy.
“These are difficult times for everyone, its all for the fans to enjoy at Carrow Road and celebrate with us all together, but hopefully they are enjoying it and drinking something at home to celebrate because I think this team feels the support from them in each and every game.”
This season has been a testing one after the Canaries relegation from the Premier League, but Buendia feels as if the team deserved their promotion after showing unity throughout the campaign.
“You can see that it's difficult to get relegated then come back to the Premier League in the next season, so you can see that this team is amazing. The first day of pre-season, everyone knew we had to go in the same way for the whole season.
“It’s an amazing atmosphere and mood in the dressing room. We know it’s a tough season because this season is long in terms of the many, many games in short periods, but this team made really good work during the season. We deserve it, to be back in the Premier League.”
After his incredible season, there’s no doubt in the midfielder’s mind that this is his best season yet but credits the chemistry he has with his team for the season he has had.
“This is my best season ever; I’ve enjoyed playing with this team a lot. When everyone is the same way, you can enjoy these games.
“I’ve scored a lot of goals and a lot of assists, but this is helping the team. Before the season, I wanted to bring this club back to the Premier League. Today, I can celebrate this.
“Its amazing, you can see these guys working together for years with Teemu [Pukki], Tim Krul, a lot of players.
“To reach the Premier League and be promoted two times in two years in the Championship is an amazing feeling. We have to enjoy it, then try to be champions again.”
