Making their return to Premier League 2 action for the first time since mid-March, Norwich City Under-23s travel to Tameside Stadium to face Burnley on Monday afternoon (2pm KO).
The U23s will be looking to put their last result right, after conceding a last-minute goal to lose out against Newcastle United U23s at the Lotus Training Centre. The loss meant Newcastle could catch up to City in the Premier League 2 table, the Magpies now sitting just two points behind the Canaries in 12th as the season comes to its end.
This Monday’s opposition aren’t so close to City in the table, as the Clarets sit third with 30 points ahead of this meeting.
A win over Burnley would see City go level on points with tenth-placed Fulham in the table with the Canaries having game in hand at the ready.
Before their near-month-long break from the league, it was heartbreak for City against the Magpies as a competitive game ended in favour of the visitors.
A battling 90 minutes neared its end, and the result looked like it was heading for a draw for both sides share the points, but Newcastle midfielder Owen Bailey provided the difference with the final kick of the game, giving the Magpies all three points.
City took one of this season’s two draws in their last meeting with Burnley, the game ending goalless after another competitive 90 minutes saw neither side able to find the back of the net.
That last clash proved to be a difficult test for the U23s, and David Wright is likely keen to see a different performance than the game back in November, which he said left the team 'disappointed'.
“We’re disappointed. I’m not quite sure we ever got going. It just felt like we were waiting for someone else to take the responsibility. That can’t be the case, right from the first minute.
“The lads have got a really good understanding of how we want to play. The reason I know that is because they’ve shown that over a number of months now.”
