Pukki and Idah earn all three points at Wycombe Wanderers

28 February 2021

Teemu Pukki and Adam Idah were the scorers in Norwich City’s 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Canaries started brightly but had to wait until the second half to find their opener, before a late Adam Idah tap-in sealed all three points.

Daniel Farke made two changes to the squad that beat Birmingham 3-1 in their last Championship outing, Onel Hernandez and Ben Gibson returning to the starting eleven.

After a quiet opening ten minutes, City opened up the chances with a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the Wycombe box after Teemu Pukki was pulled down. Mario Vrancic stepped-up to the kick, his goal-bound effort saved by the fingertips of David Stockdale.

Emi Buendia’s following corner then was headed over the bar by Kenny McLean, seeing the Chairboys away from danger.

Wycombe’s first chance of the game came through Anis Mehmeti after Uche Ikpeazu’s flicked header found the midfielder one-on-one with Tim Krul. Mehmeti opened his body up to shoot, the effort off-target in the 33rd minute.

A swift turn from Hernandez found the Cuban space inside the hosts’ 18-yard box, his cross cleared away from danger by Anthony Stewart.

Hernandez then looked to create once more with a dragback for Kenny McLean charging into the box, the Scot’s shot dragged along the floor away from the target.

Ben Gibson looked lively as he ventured up the pitch, floating a ball in for Emi Buendia, who’s header came bounding off the crossbar as City’s best chance since Vrancic’s earlier free-kick.

Just a minute later and it was Buendia who looked to shoot again, the Argentine finding space on the edge of the box and firing, his shot straight to Stockdale to end the first half.

Starting the second half brightly, Max Aarons found Hernandez in open space inside the 18-yard box, the Cuban’s header just wide.

That chance was soon forgotten about, however, when Pukki broke the deadlock for the Canaries. Finding his man inside the box, Buendia swung a cross in nicely for the striker, who made no mistake with his shot on-goal for 1-0.

It should have been two just five minutes later after some excellent build-up play by the Canaries. An excellent pass from the middle of the park by McLean found Hernandez in acres of space down the left flank, his drag-back for Buendia skied by the winger.

Wycombe looked to equalise in spectacular fashion with their first chance of the second half, Ikpeazu’s overhead kick just over the crossbar.

After a quiet period with no clear-cut chances for either side, Wycombe substitute Scott Kashket looked to lift the ball over Tim Krul and find the back of the net, his chip high and wide of the target.

Kaskhet then came close to goal once again with just over ten minutes to go, the forward sending a deflected corner back for goal, his shot over the crossbar for a second time.

Krul wasn’t without his saves in the last ten minutes, being forced to a low Daryl Horgan shot heading for the far post.

Despite the late Chairboys chances, the game was all but over when Idah made his impact after coming on as a substitution. McLean’s flick inside the hosts’ box was saved by Stockdale, but only as far as Idah, who tapped in from close-range after a City corner to finish the game.
