City exit the Emirates FA Cup following narrow loss at Barnsley

23 January 2021

Norwich City exited the Emirates FA Cup at the fourth-round stage as a goal from Callum Styles saw them fall to0 a 1-0 defeat at Oakwell.

Barnsley pressed high and edged themselves in front but Norwich came close to forcing extra time through Przemyslaw Placheta and Emi Buendia as the Canaries rallied in the final half hour.

Daniel Farke made four changes to the side that had beaten Bristol City last time out. Onel Hernandez and Lukas Rupp returned to the starting XI following a spell out injured, while Placheta and Alex Tettey also started. Out went Oliver Skipp, Buendia, Todd Cantwell and Kenny McLean.

Barnsley began the match strongly, pushing Norwich City back with a high press, and they had their first effort on target inside five minutes as Cauley Woodrow’s deflected shot from 25 yards out was blocked by Tim Krul.

Michal Helik then headed a cross just under Krul’s crossbar, which the keeper making his 100th appearance in yellow and green, saved comfortably. However, while City were enjoying plenty of possession most of it was in their own half. As a result, Krul was called into action to save a Dominik Frieser volley from inside the box.

Max Aarons replied by sending an effort, from 30 yards out, just over the crossbar but it was the hosts who went into the break feeling they should have been in front especially after Victor Adeboyejo put an effort over just before half-time.

However, Barnsley did nudge themselves in front nine minutes after the break when a cross to the far post wasn’t cleared sufficiently and Styles latched onto the loose ball before turning and firing past Krul.

That forced Farke into his first double substitution and Emi Buendia and Oliver Skipp came on, but Norwich were then dealt a blow moments later when Jordan Hugill was forced off with a hamstring injury to be replaced by Tyrese Omotoye.

However, in the final 15 minutes Norwich created two glorious chances to get back on level terms. The first came from a good run and pass by Buendia, that was dummied by Dowell for Placheta to control and hit a shot off the underside of the crossbar. Plcheta then turned provder moments later as, bearing down on goal, he squared a pass to Buendia only for the Argentine to have his shot blocked on the edge of the six yard box by a covering defender.
