What was on the line?

Just thirteen games left of the season, every point mattered in keeping City afloat at the top of the Championship. With both Leeds and Sheffield United trailing hot on City’s tails, a win against Bristol was vital in keeping the lead intact.

For the Robins, it was a similar story for their play-off bid, the side contending with Derby County at sixth and seventh as both battled for the chance of possible Premier League promotion.

How the game unfolded

Bristol started the game off brightly, finding the first goal in the 12th minute through Jamie Paterson. Stealing the ball in the midfield and firing it to Famara Diedhiou on the edge of the City box, the forward laid it off to Paterson coming into the right-side of the box unmarked.

Taking the early chance well, the midfielder fired past Tim Krul at his far post to give the Robins the early lead.

Bristol held on to their lead for the majority of the first half, before Kenny McLean equalised in the 36th minute. Emi Buendia started the move, switching play from the right side of the pitch all the way to Onel Hernandez on the opposite flank.

The Cuban worked his way into the box, laying it back to Teemu Pukki, who himself teed McLean up for a shot on goal, the Scot’s placement perfectly tucked into the bottom corner.

Just one minute later, the Robins took the lead back from the Canaries. Almost immediately after the restart, Callum O’Dowda took it upon himself to make a run from the halfway line into the City box, beating three players before nestling his shot into the bottom corner.

City weren’t out of it yet, however. Attacking relentlessly from the start of the second half, Norwich prodded Bristol until the 55th minute, when the pressure would give way for a Ben Godfrey goal.

Three attempts at goal from Buendia and Hernandez couldn’t find the back of the net, until Buendia’s pass across the goalmouth found Godfrey to side-foot into an open net.

Having levelled, the Canaries weren’t settling for a point. Pukki’s turn and shoot in the box wouldn’t go, deflecting off Tomas Kalas to McLean, who’s shot from the edge of the box curled into the bottom corner for the winner.

Norwich City XI: Krul, Aarons, Zimmermann, Godfrey, Lewis, Trybull, McLean, Buendia (Vrancic, 89), Stiepermann, Hernandez (Klose, 90+4), Pukki (Rhodes, 85)
Unused substitutes: Leitner, Hanley, McGovern, Cantwell

What happened next?

We’re sure you need no reminding of what happened at the end of the 2018-2019 season! The Canaries would go on to keep hold of their lead at the top of the Championship, winning the title at Villa Park against Aston Villa and earning promotion to the Premier League.

Bristol held on to their sixth-place position until the last five games of the season, where a tough set of results would see them take just five points and drop to eighth, missing out on the play-offs.
