Three Norwich City loan players were in action over the weekend, with Reece McAlear going close to netting a winner for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in their Scottish League Cup tie against Stirling Albion.
The Premier Sports Cup is in the group stage of the competition north of the border and, having started Inverness’ opening group game, a 2-0 win over Peterhead, McAlear dropped to the bench for the Saturday’s home match against Stirling.
However, with the scores level at 2-2, he came off the bench with seven minutes of the match remaining and almost got the winner. Driving the ball up the back, before playing a neat one-two with his teammate David Carson, McAlear sent a sweeping right-foot shot just wide of the mark.
That meant, with the scores tied at the end of play, the match went to penalties with Inverness losing the shootout 3-2. Inverness will travel to Cove Rangers on Tuesday night, before facing Heart of Midlothian on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the Scottish League Cup, goalkeeper Dan Barden was an unused substitute for Livingston as they were beaten 2-1 in their second Group D match against Alloa Athletic.
Livingston will be hoping to bounce back on Wednesday night when they play Raith Rovers at home.
Josip Drmić was also in competitive action as the Croatian First Division started on Saturday. He played 75 minutes of HNK Rijeka’s 2-0 victory over HNK Gorica.
Akin Famewo was also in action as he played the first half of Charlton Athletic’s pre-season friendly at Dartford. After a goalless first 45 minutes Famewo then watched from the bench as Charlton ran out 2-1 winners in the second half. Famewo will be hoping to be in action again this weekend as Charlton travel to the Madejski Stadium to take on Reading.
