Getting to know: Sean Stewart

29 June 2021

As the pre-season of the 2021-2022 campaign nears, we’re getting to know Norwich City Academy’s players in a bit more detail!

Next up is City wing-back Sean Stewart. You can watch our video below or take a look at our transcription of everything you need to know about the young defender!

How long have you been at Norwich City and what’s your story of joining the club?

SS: “I’ve been at the club since June 2019, so two years now and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I came from a local club from back home in Northern Ireland, one of the scouts came over and I was playing for my local club and then the Northern Ireland Under-16s at the time. From then, I came over on trial.”

How would you describe yourself as a player?

SS: “I’m an attacking wing-back, the same style as Max Aarons really. First and foremost, I defend, but I love to get forward and I think that suits the first-team’s philosophy, it suits me down to a tee.”

Who have you known the longest at the club?

SS: “When I joined, I was friends with the Irish lads, Josh [Giurgi] and Andrew [Omobamidele], who is first-team now. That gives me confidence that there’s a good pathway to the first-team, which you don’t see at other clubs really across the country.”

What is your biggest achievement to date?

SS: “I think signing my first professional contract. It’s every kid’s dream to sign a professional contract and to put the pen on the paper was a massive achievement for me. I’d say playing 23s football has also been a massive achievement for me, so I’m looking forward to playing some more.”

What has been your favourite game this season?

SS: “Definitely Leeds away for the Under-23s. It was my first appearance for the U23s and we came up against some of the big players at Leeds, in the first half I marked Pablo Hernandez then in the second half Raphinha, so that was definitely my favourite. ”

What team did you support growing up?

SS: “I supported Celtic when I was growing up, just because of the Irish link! My family supported them, I’m definitely a big Celtic fan. I like to see Man United doing well in the English league!”

Who is your favourite all-time player?

SS: “Roy Keane, just because he’s Irish and Wayne Rooney, just because he’s loved, I just love Wayne Rooney!”

What is your favourite skill move?

SS: “All my teammates would say the Cruyff turn! I always pull out the Cruyff turn when I’m in trouble, I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered it, but it’s automatic when I’m in trouble!”
