Bio: Russell Martin joined Norwich City, initially on loan, from Peterborough in November 2009, but the transfer was made permanent in January 2010. At the time the Posh were in the Championship and Norwich in League One. However, Russ played the majority of the games for the remainder of the season as the club won League One and replaced Peterborough in the Championship.
The following season back-to-back promotions to the Premier League was secured, with Russ playing all 46 league games and scoring five goals. He was impressive in the Premier League, playing at right back and, occasionally, in the centre of defence. He racked up 95 games over three seasons and scored some memorable goals against Swansea City, Queens Park Rangers, Manchester City and West Ham United.
Norwich were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2013/14 season, Russ' first as club captain. However, he led the Canaries back to the Premier League at the first attempt. The following season he played another 30 games and made his 300th appearance in a 2-0 win against Brighton on April 21, 2017. He signed a new deal that summer but following just seven more appearance the following season his contract was terminated by mutual consent. Overall, Russ played 309 games for the club, putting him 22nd on the club’s all-time appearance list.
Memorable moment
Russ capped off a memorable weekend in September 2015 when he witnessed the birth of his son and scored an equalising goal at Anfield eight hours later.
"It was a bit of a rush,” he told Sky Sports. “My wife understood and was delighted I was there for the birth and then go up the road and get a goal. I got the best of both worlds."
Where is he now?
Russ has been manager of MK Dons since November, 2019, and led the club away from relegation trouble in his first season in charge. Last season MK Dons finished in a respectable 13th place.
